Moving to Mars is a dream at the moment but Thomas Misse makes the first step in terms of chairs as it created a stackable, lightweight chair with carbon fibre as the material of choice. This project was created as there was a brief for the creation of furniture suitable for Mars. His project aimed to get furniture buyers ready for the future as products are to be imported to space from Earth. He declared:
“This product is a small step closer to Mars, but aims to set up the ground base of a way of thinking about the production implication of the early stage of space colonization. Before industries get set up in this new home all products will have to be imported from Earth. This will be a drastic change in the way we look at the production: transportation will represent most of the cost – estimations are yet around 5,000 EUR per kilogram with limited storage volume.”
Getting back to the carbon fibre Mars chair, it weighs only 500 grams and has a thickness of 2 mm. This makes it highly space and cost efficient. As you stack it up the amount of space that is occupied is just 1 centimeter. You basically get 1.5 meters for 100 chairs.

Carbon fibre is quite great because it is lightweight but it is also very strong. The claim is that a sumo wrestler’s weight can be withstood. The material is normally expensive so if you think about buying one for your home here on Earth, you will think twice.
