Cleaning Your Silver

You probably have silver objects in your house. Even silver items need to be cleaned from time to time. Here are a few easy ways to make your tarnished silver shiny again:

  1. Aluminum foil

Boil one piece of aluminum with one tablespoon of baking soda and water. After the water starts boiling, you will have to drop your silverware in the pot for 10 seconds. You may keep it longer if your silverware is heavily tarnished. If the tarnish persists make yourself a thick paste made up of baking soda and two tablespoons of water. By using a sponge, spread the paste, then rinse and wash. Leave your silverware to dry.

  1. Laundry detergent

Another great way to clean silverware is with laundry detergent. Add your silverware into a bowl full of hot water and add a tablespoon of powdered laundry detergent. Simply soak the silver for one minute.

  1. Ketchup

This isn`t a well known method of dealing with tarnished silver, but you should know about it. You can add some ketchup to a paper towel and rub the silver gently. If you have crevices, use a toothbrush to clean them too.

  1. Corn Starch

The corn starch mixed with water formula will make the silver look new once again. The formula made of water and corn starch needs to be applied on a cloth and after that it needs to be rubbed on the silver. If you don`t have corn starch, you can choose tartar cream which is a great substitute.

  1. Hand sanitizer

Besides the fact that the hand sanitizer destroys germs it is a great silver polisher. Just add a few drops on a cloth and rub all of the tarnish away.

  1. Lemon-lime soda

You can simply dump your silver items in a bowl full of lime soda. You need to leave the silver items there for one hour and after that simply rinse and dry them out.

  1. Toothpaste

Another great way to clean your silver is by using toothpaste. You can put some toothpaste on a rag and polish your silver. After you finish doing this, you will see that the silver will shine.

  1. Window cleaner

A window cleaner is another great way to clean the silverware. You will only need to put some solution on a rag and just scrub the sterling silver. By doing so, you will make the silver shine once more.

  1. Hair conditioner

Try rubbing some hair conditioner on clean silver. This will prevent it from tarnishing.

  1. Chalk

If you want to keep the silver as shiny as you want, it is a great idea to keep a few pieces of chalk near the place where you keep the silver. The chalk is known for absorbing moisture and this will prevent your silverware to tarnish.

  1. Vinegar

Mix white vinegar with two tablespoons of baking soda and soak your silver into this solution. You will have to wait a few minutes for the solution to clean your silver and after that you only need to wash it.
